Aging in Place: Growing With Your Home

(Waukesha, WI) April 5, 2007 – When looking at building a new home, there are many things that you will want incorporated into the design. A functional floorplan, lots of windows, and top of the line kitchens and baths often top the list. It’s important to also consider the plan’s longevity – how long it will work for you as you age or encounter physical challenges.

Homeowners interested in learning more about the kind of details that will allow them to stay in their home longer can attend a free consumer seminar, “Aging in Place: Growing With Your Home” on Thursday, April 19that 7 p.m. Diana Sullivan of Independence First  will be leading this discussion on Universal Design. The format of the presentation will allow plenty of time for attendees to ask questions.

“Planning for the natural aging process ensures that your home will be accessible to you and your guests for years down the line,” said MBA Executive Director Matt Moroney. “What many people don’t realize is that these details don’t make the home environment sterile or stark. On the contrary, wider hallways create a sense of openness, lever handles are available in a variety of styles and finishes, and reinforced walls don’t look any different on the outside than a typical wall. The function that these features offer isn’t fully realized until a challenge exists.”

“Aging in Place: Growing With Your Home” runs Thursday, April 19th from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan Builders Association’s office – N16 W23321 Stone Ridge Drive in Waukesha. Pre-registration is recommended but not required for this free seminar. To register, please visit www.mbaonline.org or call 262-436-1122.
